Gravell Has Potential
REVIEW BY STEPHEN CARR (MERTHYR EXPRESS)
Gravell Trial & Error
Trial & Error...is a throwback to (a) decade when style mattered. There are occasional echoes of late Pink Floyd and even a peppering of Goth a la Sisters of Mercy, ...the predominant use of keyboards give the whole thing a very hollow, artificial feel.
The opening track, You, could be described as rock cabaret…..Programmed to Receive (with a minute-and-a-half-long intro!) feigns darkness and moodiness. Everlasting tries to crank the pace up, while the truly absurd There Will Never Be Another sounds like Nick Cave attempting something from the musical Joseph And His Technicolour Dreamcoat- complete with the backing chorus.
In a long vanished era, he might have had a chance to shine….
